The imparfait is the past tense of description, habit and ongoing action. Where the passé composé snaps a photo of a completed event, the imparfait films the background: « Il pleuvait » (it was raining), « Je travaillais » (I was working / I used to work).
1 · When to use it
Reach for the imparfait for: ongoing actions (« was -ing »), habits and repeated actions, descriptions (people, places, weather, feelings), age and time in the past, and two actions happening at the same time.
- Il faisait froid et il neigeait. It was cold and it was snowing. (description)
- Tous les étés, nous allions à la mer.Every summer we went to the sea. (habit)
- J'avais dix ans.I was ten years old. (age in the past)
2 · How it's formed
Take the nous form of the present, drop -ons, and add the same endings for every verb.
| Person | Ending | parler | finir |
|---|---|---|---|
| je | -ais | parlais | finissais |
| tu | -ais | parlais | finissais |
| il / elle | -ait | parlait | finissait |
| nous | -ions | parlions | finissions |
| vous | -iez | parliez | finissiez |
| ils / elles | -aient | parlaient | finissaient |
| Verb | nous form | Stem | je form |
|---|---|---|---|
| faire | faisons | fais- | faisais |
| prendre | prenons | pren- | prenais |
| boire | buvons | buv- | buvais |
| voir | voyons | voy- | voyais |
| finir | finissons | finiss- | finissais |
3 · The only exception: être
être is the single verb whose imparfait stem isn't taken from the nous-present. Use ét-.
| Person | Form |
|---|---|
| je | étais |
| tu | étais |
| il / elle | était |
| nous | étions |
| vous | étiez |
| ils / elles | étaient |
4 · Spelling changes (-ger, -cer)
These keep pronunciation soft: -ger verbs keep the e before a (mangeais) but not before i (mangions); -cer verbs take ç before a (commençais) but not before i (commencions).
| Person | manger | commencer |
|---|---|---|
| je | mangeais | commençais |
| tu | mangeais | commençais |
| il / elle | mangeait | commençait |
| nous | mangions | commencions |
| vous | mangiez | commenciez |
| ils / elles | mangeaient | commençaient |
5 · Imparfait vs passé composé
The classic contrast. The imparfait sets the scene (ongoing, habitual, descriptive); the passé composé reports a completed event that moves the story forward.
- Il pleuvait, alors nous sommes restés à la maison. It was raining (background), so we stayed home (event).
- Quand j'étais jeune, j'ai visité Paris une fois. When I was young (state), I visited Paris once (single event).
6 · Useful patterns
- Si on allait au cinéma ?How about going to the cinema? (Si + imparfait = suggestion)
- J'étudiais le français depuis deux ans.I had been studying French for two years. (depuis + imparfait)
- Il y avait beaucoup de monde. There were a lot of people. (description)
Common mistakes
Elision is obligatory: je + étais → j'étais.
The stem comes from nous finissons → finiss-, so the -iss- stays.
The nous ending is -ions, and -ger verbs drop the extra e before i → mangions.
A single, completed action at a precise time uses the passé composé, not the imparfait.
