Agreement, Gender & Spelling
L’accord, le genre et l’orthographeAgreement spreads outward from the noun. You must know its gender, form the plural correctly, and make every adjective and past participle match. Spelling traps — number words and accents that change meaning — round out the category.
Often feminine: -tion, -sion, -té, -ette, -ée (idée). Often masculine: -ment, -eau, -age, -isme, -ème. Learn the exceptions: musée, lycée, problème, système are masculine; page, plage, eau are feminine.
-al → -aux (journaux), but festivals/bals/carnavals keep -s. -eau/-eu → -x (tableaux, jeux), but pneus/bleus take -s. Seven -ou words take -x (bijoux, cailloux, choux, genoux, hiboux, joujoux, poux).
With être → agree with the SUBJECT (elle est partie). With avoir → agree only with a DIRECT object placed BEFORE the verb (les fleurs que j’ai achetées); otherwise no agreement.
quatre-vingt and cent take a final -s only as an exact, FINAL multiple (quatre-vingts, deux cents) — none if a number follows (quatre-vingt-deux, deux cent trois). mille is always invariable. Accents distinguish à/a, où/ou, là/la.
| Masculine | Feminine | Example |
|---|---|---|
| blanc | blanche | une robe blanche |
| beau | belle | une belle vue |
| vieux | vieille | une vieille ville |
| heureux | heureuse | une fille heureuse |
| doux | douce | une voix douce |
| Normal | Before vowel | Example |
|---|---|---|
| beau | bel | un bel arbre |
| nouveau | nouvel | un nouvel ami |
| vieux | vieil | un vieil homme |
| Rule | Example |
|---|---|
| -s on an exact, final multiple | quatre-vingts, deux cents |
| no -s if a number follows | quatre-vingt-deux, deux cent trois |
| mille always invariable | dix mille |
- Articles and adjectives agree with the noun’s gender and number.
- être past participle → subject; avoir past participle → a preceding direct object.
- quatre-vingt / cent take -s only as an exact, final multiple; mille never does.
- Accents distinguish words: à/a, où/ou, là/la.
