The Present Tense — the verb engine of your writing

  • The verb is the heart of every sentence, and the present tense is the one you use most — for opinions, general truths, habits and current states.
  • It is the engine of Section B (je pense que, on doit, il faut).
  • This chapter drills every family — -er, -ir, -re, the essential irregulars, stem-changers and reflexives — until conjugation is automatic and agreement is reflex.

Why the present tense is the engine of your score

  • You already build correct, connected, article-accurate sentences. But every one needs a correctly conjugated verb — and the present is the tense you'll write most, especially in Section B, where you state and defend opinions.
  • A wrong verb ending is a counted error on the most frequent word in the sentence.
⚙️The whole system in one idea: a present-tense verb = a stem + an ending that matches the subject. Learn the endings for each family and the handful of irregulars, and conjugation becomes automatic.

The pattern, shown once

parler (to speak) — a regular -er verb
jeparle
tuparles
il/elle/onparle
nousparlons
vousparlez
ils/ellesparlent

Same stem (parl-) throughout; only the ending changes with the subject. That is the whole engine.

Why the present matters for the exam

  • Section B lives in the present: Je pense que…, À mon avis…, On doit…, Il faut…, C'est…
  • General truths & habits: Les gens travaillent beaucoup ; chaque jour, je prends le bus.
  • Current states & descriptions (with être/avoir): La ville est calme ; j'ai deux enfants.
  • It's the base for other tenses — the passé composé auxiliary and the near future both use the present.
🧭
  • How to study this chapter. Tab 1 is the -er machine (most verbs).
  • Tab 2 does -ir/-re; Tab 3 the essential irregulars; Tab 4 the stem-changers; Tab 5 reflexives + when to use the present.
  • Tab 6 is your verb bank. Tabs 7–13 are practice.
  • Say every conjugation aloud, in full.
Your goal by the end

Conjugate any regular verb and the top irregulars in the present without hesitation, and write an opinion paragraph in which every verb agrees with its subject — zero infinitives-as-main-verb and zero agreement errors.

1 · Regular -er verbs — the 90%

About nine in ten French verbs end in -er, and they all conjugate the same way. Master this one pattern and you can conjugate the vast majority of verbs you'll ever write.

The recipe: drop -er, add the ending

Take the infinitive (parler), remove -er to get the stem (parl-), then add: -e, -es, -e, -ons, -ez, -ent.

aimer (to like/love)
j'aime
tuaimes
il/elle/onaime
nousaimons
vousaimez
ils/ellesaiment

Common -er verbs you'll use constantly

parler speakhabiter livetravailler workaimer likepenser thinktrouver findregarder watchécouter listenchercher look fordonner givearriver arriverester stay

The pronunciation trap (why writing is harder than speaking)

The endings -e, -es, -ent are all silent — je parle, tu parles, ils parlent sound identical. But the grader reads your writing, so the ending must be correct on the page even though your ear can't hear it.

Je pense que c'est vrai.Section B opener
Nous habitons à Laval.nous → -ons
Les gens travaillent beaucoup.ils/elles → -ent (silent)
Vous parlez français ?vous → -ez
Going deeper — j' before a vowel, and -ger/-cer spelling

je → j' before a vowel: j'aime, j'habite, j'écoute. And two spelling adjustments keep the sound soft in the nous form: manger → nous mangeons (keep the e), commencer → nous commençons (ç). Full treatment in Tab 4.

✕Je parler français. → Je parle français.Main verb must be conjugated, not the infinitive.VERB-INF

Conjugate: (a) je (penser) (b) nous (habiter) (c) ils (regarder) (d) vous (écouter). → (a) je pense (b) nous habitons (c) ils regardent (d) vous écoutez.

2 · Regular -ir and -re verbs

Two smaller families with their own endings. They're fully regular within the family — learn one model of each and you have them all.

-ir verbs (finir type)

Drop -ir, add: -is, -is, -it, -issons, -issez, -issent. Note the -iss- in the plural.

-re verbs (attendre type)

Drop -re, add: -s, -s, — (nothing), -ons, -ez, -ent. The il/elle form has no ending after the stem.

Going deeper — the "short -ir" verbs are different
  • A group of common -ir verbs — partir, sortir, dormir, sentir, servir — does not take -iss-.
  • They drop the last consonant of the stem in the singular: je pars, tu pars, il part, nous partons, vous partez, ils partent.
  • Treat them as irregular; they're in Tab 3's neighbourhood and the verb bank (Tab 6).
✕Je finis → nous finons → nous finissons-ir plural keeps -iss-.VERB-CONJ

3 · The essential irregular verbs

A small set of very common verbs is irregular — but because you use them constantly, they stick fast. These are the highest-value conjugations in French; know them cold.

The big four — être, avoir, aller, faire

être beavoir havealler gofaire do/make
je/j'suisaivaisfais
tuesasvasfais
il/elle/onestavafait
noussommesavonsallonsfaisons
vousêtesavezallezfaites

The modals — pouvoir, vouloir, devoir (+ infinitive)

pouvoir canvouloir wantdevoir must
jepeuxveuxdois
tupeuxveuxdois
il/elle/onpeutveutdoit
nouspouvonsvoulonsdevons
vouspouvezvoulezdevez
ils/ellespeuventveulentdoivent

Remember from Chapter 1: after a modal, the second verb stays in the infinitive — je veux partir, on doit respecter, je peux aider.

More high-frequency irregulars

venir comeprendre takevoir seedire say
jeviensprendsvoisdis
tuviensprendsvoisdis
il/elle/onvientprendvoitdit
nousvenonsprenonsvoyonsdisons
vousvenezprenezvoyezdites
ils/ellesviennentprennentvoientdisent
Going deeper — notice the shared shapes
  • Many irregulars share a rhythm: -x, -x, -t in the singular (je peux, tu peux, il peut ; je veux…), and -ons, -ez, -ent in the plural like everyone else.
  • And a few "double the plural stem": venir → ils viennent, prendre → ils prennent.
  • Spotting these patterns cuts the memory load.

Some -er verbs are regular in their endings but adjust their stem (or spelling) to keep the pronunciation right. The pattern is predictable: the change happens in every form except nous and vous.

🔁The shape to remember: the stem changes in the je, tu, il, ils forms (the "boot"), but nous and vous keep the original stem.

e → è (acheter, lever, se promener)

j'achète
tuachètes
il/elleachète
nousachetons

é → è (préférer, espérer, répéter)

je préfère, tu préfères, il préfèreé → è in the boot

ils préfèrentback to è

Double the consonant (appeler → appelle, jeter → jette)

j'appelle, tu appelles, il appelle, ils appellent-ll- in the boot
nous appelons, vous appelezsingle l for nous/vous

Spelling keepers — manger, commencer, payer

manger (-ger)nous mangeons (keep the e for a soft g)
commencer (-cer)nous commençons (ç for a soft c)
payer (-yer)je paie / nous payons (y → i in the boot)
✕je achète → j'achete → j'achètee → è in the je form.STEM
✕nous préfèrons → nous préféronsnous/vous keep the original é.STEM
✕nous mangons → nous mangeonsKeep the e after g before -ons.STEM
✕j'appele → j'appelleappeler doubles the l in the boot.STEM

Conjugate: (a) je (préférer) (b) nous (manger) (c) il (appeler) (d) nous (commencer). → (a) je préfère (b) nous mangeons (c) il appelle (d) nous commençons.

5 · Reflexive verbs & the uses of the present

Reflexive (pronominal) verbs carry an extra pronoun (me, te, se…) that refers back to the subject — used for daily routine and many common actions. Then: exactly when to use the present tense.

Reflexive verbs — the pronoun sits before the verb

se lever (to get up)
je me lève
tu te lèves
il/elle se lève
nous nous levons
vous vous levez
ils/elles se lèvent
se lever get upse laver washse coucher go to bedse réveiller wake ups'appeler be calledse reposer rests'habiller get dressed

Negation wraps the verb, pronoun included: Je ne me lève pas tôt. Before a vowel, me/te/se → m'/t'/s': je m'appelle, il s'habille.

When to use the present tense

general truth
L'eau bout à 100°.facts that are always true

Je pense que c'est utile.the exam engine

Two extras the exam loves

  • Near future with a time word: Demain, je travaille. (present can express a planned future) — or use aller + infinitif: je vais travailler.
  • depuis for an ongoing situation: J'habite ici depuis deux ans. (French uses the present, unlike English "have lived").
Going deeper — aller + infinitive (the near future)
  • To talk about something coming soon, use aller (present) + infinitive: je vais travailler, on va voir, ils vont partir.
  • It's built entirely from the present of aller (Tab 3) + a plain infinitive — no new tense needed.
  • Very useful in Section B for plans and consequences.
Going deeper — the imperative (advice / call to action)
  • To give advice or a call to action (handy in Section B), drop the subject pronoun from the present: Protégeons l'environnement ! (nous), Agissez maintenant. (vous), Fais attention. (tu — -er verbs drop the final -s: Parle !).
  • A polished alternative to il faut / on doit.
✕Je lève à 7 h. → Je me lève à 7 h.se lever is reflexive — keep the pronoun.REFL
✕Je me ne lève pas. → Je ne me lève pas.ne goes before the reflexive pronoun.REFL
✕J'habite ici depuis deux ans → j'ai habité (for a still-true situation) → J'habite ici depuis deux ans.With depuis (still true) → present.USAGE

Going deeper — the verb pass

On your re-read, do a dedicated verb pass: underline every verb and check (1) is it conjugated (not an infinitive)? (2) does the ending match the subject? (3) is the irregular/stem form right? This single pass removes most Section-B grammar errors.

Doubt-clearing FAQ

Q. The -e, -es and -ent endings sound the same — how do I choose in writing?
A. By the subject, not the sound. je/il → -e, tu → -es, ils/elles → -ent. The grader reads the letters, so match the ending to the subject every time.
Q. Do I really need all the irregulars now?
A. Learn the big four (être, avoir, aller, faire) and the three modals cold — they appear in almost every paragraph. Add prendre/venir/voir/dire next. The rest you can look up in the verb bank.
Q. Present or « aller + infinitif » for the future?
A. Both work at this level. Demain, je travaille (present + time word) or je vais travailler (near future). Use whichever you control; don't force a future tense you haven't learned yet.
Q. Why is it « je joue au foot » but « je joue du piano »?
A. jouer à for games/sports, jouer de for instruments. Many verbs pair with a fixed preposition (penser à, avoir besoin de) — learn the verb with its preposition, like nouns with their article.
Q. How do I ask a question in the present?
A. Same three ways as Chapter 1: intonation (Tu travailles ?), est-ce que (Est-ce que tu travailles ?), or inversion (Travailles-tu ?). The verb stays in the present throughout.
🎯

The 30-second verb self-check. On every verb: (1) conjugated, not an infinitive? (2) ending matches the subject? (3) irregular/stem form correct? (4) être vs avoir right (age, states)? (5) reflexive pronoun present? Run it and you kill the whole family.
